Daily Freeman Journal, Webster City, Iowa, Monday, December 29, 1919

A.F. Swanson of Stanhope, a pioneer resident of Hamilton county and one of her best known merchants until he retired a few years ago, died at his home Dec. 15. The Jewell Record has the following:

The unexpected death of Alfred F. Swanson came as a shock to the community, when word was received early Monday morning. Mr. Swanson attended church Sunday morning and to his friends seemed as well as usual. In the evening about 7:30 he was taken with a stroke of cerebral apoplexy and lived through the night until 7:20, when he passed to the Great Beyond on December 15, 1919.

He was born in Sweden, June 11, 1857, and came to America in the year 1863. He lived in various places including Chicago, Stratford and Stanhope, coming to Stanhope in 1884, and resided there until his death. He has been engaged in the mercantile business for 35 years, from which he retired a few years ago. At the time of his death he was in partnership at the Stark Bros. garage.

Mr. Swanson was united in marriage to Sadie Stark of Stanhope in 1888 and to this union one child was born, Mildred Kauffman, who resides at Guthrie, Oklahoma. Other relatives who survive, besides his wife, are two brothers, Charley Swanson and Oscar Swanson, of Stratford, two sisters, Mrs. C.O. Rodine of Stratford and Mrs. James Johnson of Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Swanson was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he had been an earnest member, and always a ready and willing worker, and from which church his funeral was conducted on Thursday, December 18, at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. G.H. Dick, and interment was made in Stanhope cemetery [Lawn Hill Cemetery] southeast of town with Fred Truesdale, Ed Snyder, Ed Johnson, Bob Fisher and Gus Lavine as pall bearers.

The many relatives and friends will sadly miss Mr. Swanson from the earth circle, for he was always a kind friend, a good husband and a kind and loving father. Among the relatives who were at the funeral besides the brothers and sisters of the deceased were S. Stark of Chicago, L.J. Stark and wife of Guthrie, Okla., A.T. Stark of Fargo, N.D., Mrs. M.J. Stark and Bertha Stark of Webster City, Iowa.
