Stanhope Sentinel, Stanhope, Iowa, Thursday, May 6, 1926

The funeral services for Mrs. G.T. Read who passed away at her home in Stanhope Thursday afternoon were held in the Methodist Episcopal church Sunday afternoon, with Reverend Carl Hammer, a former pastor of this place officiating.

Mrs. Mary Ann Wilcher Read was born at Royalton, Ohio, February 16, 1854 and died at her home, April 29, 1926, at the age of 72 years, 2 months and 13 days. When she was 2 years old, she moved with her parents to Will county, Illinois, and at the age of 7 years to Kankakee, Illinois. In the year of 1890 she moved to this state and to Stanhope in 1907, where she resided until her death.

She was united in marriage to Geo. Thurley Read, the 12th day of January, 1873, and to this union were born 7 children, of whom six are living. They are James William, of Jewell, Charles E., of Stanhope, George, of Lohrville, Mrs. Mable Branch and Benjamin of Jewell, and Harry A., of Stanhope. One baby daughter died at the age of about four years.

Besides the husband and children who will miss the companionship of a loving wife and kind mother are one brother, William Wilcher, of Texas, and one sister, Mrs. Maude Corrow, of Clarksfield, Minnesota, 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, also a number of other relatives and a host of friends, whose memory will be long endeared.

The deceased had been in failing health for the past two years, and was bedfast about ten days. She was a patient sufferer to the last. She united with the M.E. church 15 years ago, and became one of the pillars of the church taking an active part in the work of the church, in which her faith was strong as she passed through the portals to the great beyond, from the midst of her children and husband who were with her as the spirit left the body to meet its maker.

Her absence will be keenly felt by the husband after a companionship of 53 years. She will also be sorely missed by many as a true friend and kind neighbor.

Mrs. Read was a woman who gained the respect of those who knew her, and to know her was to like her, for she was old fashioned in her ideals, she was hospitable, and her friends were at home with her.

The funeral rites were conducted by Reverend Carl Hammer of Salix, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. Lovejoy of Kamrar. And in memory of a departing neighbor and friend, a few words were spoken by Rev. G.H. Dick.

The services at the house were held at 1:30, and at the church at 2:00 o'clock. Following the funeral services the body was borne to the Lawn Hill cemetery, where the five sons, and one son-in-law, James Branch, as pallbearers, gently lowered the casket to its earthly resting place.

She is gone but not forgotten,
For her memory lingers still.
As a kind, loving wife and mother
She ever sought her Fathers will.
