Gretchen Johnson, age 84, of Sioux City, Iowa, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2015, at her home. As per her wishes, she will be cremated and no services are planned. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Gretchen Helene, daughter of William and Gertrude (Gumtau) Parker, was born May 26, 1931, in Webster City, Iowa. She grew up on a farm with her parents and graduated from Stanhope High School. (Gretchen’s grandfather Ray Parker started the town of Stanhope, where five generations of her family are buried.) She then attended Iowa State College.

On August 2, 1961, Gretchen was united in marriage with Dr. D.G. Johnson in Omaha, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union. Gretchen and her husband bred show dogs under Alphorn Kennel, producing 30 litters with 51 champions. She was an AKC judge, judging in the United States and Europe, and was a lifetime member of the local kennel club, Bernese Mountain Dog Club and St. Bernard Club. She enjoyed music, woodcarving, painting, sewing and decorating.

Gretchen is survived by four children: Gregg of Sioux City; Nicki of Coralville; Gina of Edina, MN; and Norman of Anderson, CA; four granddaughters; one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
