OBITUARY

Bertha E. Newcomb was born on a farm near Lohrville in Calhoun county December 24, 1880 [headstone says 1882] and died at Iowa City Friday, Nov. 1, 1912 at 6 o'clock at the age of 31 years, 10 months and 7 days. The cause of her death was peritonitis and other complicated diseases. When 18 years of age she was united with the Christian church at Adaza, Iowa, and from that time until her death she lived a Christian life, and was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was united in marriage to Leroy A. Jenkins Oct. 16, 1902 at Azada. One child, Derrel, preceded the mother in death. Deceased leaves to mourn her loss, a husband and little daughter, Erma, and infant son, Lyle, her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. S.D. Newcomb of Northrup, Nebr., three sisters Mrs. Fred Stotts of Churdan, Iowa, Mrs. Roy Drake of Rinard and Mrs. Fonts of Vail, Iowa, and three brothers, Prentis Newcomb of Lohrville and Alonzo and Watson Newcomb of Northrup, Nebr. The funeral took place at the Christian church Monday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Shaw preaching the sermon. The body was interred at the Stanhope cemetery [Lawn Hill] south of town.
