Harry A. Read, 76, a lifetime Stanhope resident and a former Hamilton County supervisor, died suddenly Sunday night at Mary Greeley hospital in Ames.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist church in Stanhope with the Rev. Robert Winter officiating and with burial in the Lawn Hill cemetery near Stanhope. Graveside Masonic rites will be conducted by Acorn Lodge 601 of Stratford. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when it will be taken to the church.

Harry A. Read, son of George Thurley and Mary Ann Welch Read, was born April 22, 1895, on a farm east of Stanhope. He was reared and educated in the Stanhope community.

He was united in marriage Jan. 30, 1924 at Webster City to Hazel Snyder, and the couple made their home in Stanhope where Mr. Read owned and operated the Read Auto Co. until his retirement in 1962.

He is survived by his wife; three daughters and one son, Mrs. Floyd (Mary) Hage of Ames, Mrs. Robert (Naomi) Lee of Iowa City, Mrs. DeWayne (Roma Jean) Anderson of Arvada, Colo., and Jack Read of Stanhope. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mable Branch of Webster City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

He was a 50-year member of the Stratford Masonic lodge, Acorn 601; was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to the Consistery in Des Moines. He also belonged to the Woodmen lodge and was a charter member of the Stanhope Lions club.
