James H. Knight, 98, longtime Stanhope area resident, died early Saturday evening at the Stratford Care Center where he had resided the past six months. He had been in ill health the past two years.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Our Savior's Lutheran church in Stanhope with the Rev. Dwight McElree officiating and with burial in the Lawn Hill cemetery near Stanhope. The body will lie in state at the Foster Funeral home until 9:30 a.m. Tuesday when it will be taken to the church.

James Henry Knight, son of Daniel and Martha Ritter Knight, was born Sept. 14, 1879 in Boone county. At the age of 12, he moved with his family, farming one mile south of Stanhope. He was reared and educated in that community.

He was united in marriage Jan. 23, 1901 to Mattie Jackson, and the couple resided on the family farm south of Stanhope.

They retired in 1957, and the family continued to reside on the farm.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Ione) Meyer of Boone and Mrs. Wilma Ridge of Stanhope; one grandson, Donald Meyer of Rural Route 3, Boone; two great-grandchildren, Jim Meyer of Manson and Mrs. Jim (Karen) Nash of Cedar Rapids; one great-great-granddaughter, Jennifer Meyer of Manson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, his parents, two brothers and one sister.
