Lorene Mary Butler, 73, Williams, died Monday, March 16 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 19, 1998 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams at 10 a.m. with Rev. Raymond Burkle, officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be at the Surls Funeral Home in Williams from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday. A parish wake service will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.

Lorene Mary Smith, daughter of Frank and Mary Maubach Smith, was born Sept. 10, 1924 on a farm near Blairsburg. She graduated from high school in Blairsburg in 1943. On October 10, 1945, she married Leo J. Butler. The couple farmed near Williams until their retirement and moved to Williams in 1996.

Survivors are her husband, Leo; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Paul Fankhauser of Williams; a son, James of Belmond, four grandchildren, Cheri Matthews of Winnebago, NE, Tom Butler of Belmond, Brian Fankhauser of Webster City, Dan Butler of Iowa City; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leona Keane of Williams and Bernice Brighton of Ankeny; two brothers, Robert Smith of Ellsworth and Harold Smith of Dunlap.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers-in-law.
