Oct 14, 2016Shirley Jean (Young) Rickard, 84, passed away at home on Oct. 10th following a brief illness. Born in Iowa in 1932 to Almon and Mary Young. Shirley grew up in Graettinger and Webster City, Iowa. After graduation, Shirley and a close friend, seeking adventure and work, moved to California. It was there she met and fell in love with a young Marine named Ron Rickard. After marrying and Ron’s discharge, they settled near his family in Spokane. They had 63 years together raising a family, playing cards, a trip every year back to Iowa, enjoying their cabin at Loon Lake and grandkids. Shirley retired from the City of Spokane Treasurer’s Dept. after many years of service.
She is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, and a son, Brian. Shirley is survived by her husband, Ronald, two children: Bill (Maureen) and Melody (Ed) Tucker, four grandchildren: Rana Robb (Chris), Rachel Key (Bryan), Kelsey Rickard, and Travis Tucker, and four great grandchildren: Ella, Mollie, Vivien, and Finn; her sister Marilyn Strain of Webster City, sister-in-law, Barb Young, of Webster City; brother-in-law, Tom (Jeannie) Rickard of Newport; long time friend, Alice McDowell, and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, always looking for the good in the world which was reflected in her warm smile and laugh.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday October 15, 2016 at Hennessey Funeral Home, 2203 N. Division
