Kurt Walter Van Doren entered this world on Dec. 13, 1969 in Des Moines IA. On August 17, 2015, he left it on his own terms. He was living in Portland OR.

Some of the happiest days of his life were spent in Webster City IA at Brewer's Creek; delivering the Des Moines Register; stocking produce at Fareway; competing on the Webster City High School Science Quiz Bowl; and participating in feats of daring with his "gang" of buddies.

Kurt's passions were listening to and recording jazz instrumentals; photography; flowers (especially highly scented roses); recumbent bicycling (he didn't own a car); Mts. Hood and St. Helens; the Columbia River; repurposing materials/objects rejected by others (his recliner was retrieved from the curb and transported to his apartment on his bicycle); woodworking; and competing with his mother to see who could attract and feed the most song birds and hummingbirds. (He lost.)

Kurt's college degree from UNI was in chemistry. The depth and breadth of his knowledge and talents were limitless, as was his compassion for the under-dog.

Kurt is survived by grandmother Cora Van Doren of Ames IA; father Kieth Van Doren (Ann) of Centennial CO; mother Mary Shultz (Loren) of Milwaukie OR; brothers Chris Van Doren (Stephanie) of Mims FL and Rob Van Doren (Emily) of Loveland CO; uncle Bill Fleming (Kathy) of Bettendorf IA; aunt Pat Jansen (Herm) of Estes Park CO, four nephews and one niece; and one great niece. Additionally, he is mourned by two step sisters and two step brothers and their respective spouses and children; former aunts Sharon Van Doren (Highlands Ranch CO) and Marge Fleming (Houston TX); former sister in law Dawn Hetland (Waukee IA); as well as many cousins. Preceding him in death were grandparents Bob Van Doren of Ames IA and Logan and Grace Fleming of Traer IA and uncles Jim Van Doren (Ruth) of Denver CO and Dave (Beth) Fleming of Marshalltown IA.

A Celebration of Life was held Saturday, August 22nd at his mother's home in Milwaukie OR.

Memorials may be made to the Autism Society of America, National Public Radio, or the donor's charity of choice.

Fly high, Kurt ...
