Mrs. J. A. Mertz, 82, died at 1:50 yesterday afternoon at her home, 700 Union street. She had been in failing health the past year.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Foster funeral home with the Rev. James L. Neighbours officiating. Burial will be on the family lot in Graceland cemetery.

Katie Mary Yaus, daughter of Louis and Annie Bryan Yaus, was born Nov. 2, 1869 at Tunnell Mine, Ohio. She was reared and educated in that vicinity and Sandyville, Ohio. After the death of her mother, she came with her father, two brothers and two sisters to Iowa in 1884, locating in Webster City.

She was united in marriage to James A. Mertz March 19, 1892, and she had made her home in Webster City ever since.

She was preceded in death by one son, Lloyd, who died at the age of 9 months; by her parents, two brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three sons and four daughters: Ralph L. Mertz, Sioux City; Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Clerff, Webster City; Mrs. Leonard (Velva) Jacobson of Ames; George A. Mertz, Miss Opal Mertz, Harry J. Mertz and Mrs. B. M. (Gertrude) Ermels, all of Webster City. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mertz was a Universalist in belief and in her earlier years was a faithful attendant of the church.

A loving wife and mother, her home and family were always her main interests in life. She was a neighborly, friendly individual, and in her later years was especially devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
