Daily Freeman Journal, December 26, 1928, p.8

John Knuth was born in Schleswig, Germany in 1844, and died in Stratford, Dec. 17, 1928, being 84 years, 2 months and 2 days old. He came to America in 1866, and first located at Clinton, Iowa, but in 1873 he came to Hamilton county and had resided here ever since.
Farming for many years east of Stratford, in 1898 he left the farm and had since resided in Stratford. Mr. Knuth was married to Dorthea Kathrina Hubner in 1868, and they had four children, one of whom died in infancy. Mrs. Knuth died in 1880. Mr. Knuth was re-married in 1882 to Anna M. Bahnsen and she passed away on Dec. 4, 1905.
Mr. Knuth had lived for a number of years with his daughter, Mrs. Henry Sweeney, of Stratford.
His nearest relatives left are: One brother, Hans Knuth, Teed’s Grove, Iowa, and the following children. Mary Echmalfeldt, of Wyoming, Iowa; Henry Knuth, of Olgelvie, Minn.; Anna Sweeney, of Stratford; Ben Knuth, of Minneapolis, and 12 grandchildren and other relatives.
Mr. Knuth had been a well-respected and industrious citizen of this county and enjoyed many years of retirement. He had two strokes before the last one that caused his death and for a year or two had not been able to be active as in former days, but he kept his interest in life and things in general until the last. His last illness was merciful, only of a few hours duration. In his boyhood days, he was confirmed in Lutheran church in Germany, but there not being a church of that denomination here, he worshipped with the congregation of the Methodist church. Mr. Knuth was one of the pioneer residents of this community and he did his share to develop the country into the prosperous place that it is.
Funeral services were held at the home, and at the Methodist church in Stratford, conducted by Rev. Wm. Bottom. Burial was made in Oakwood cemetery.
