Haldor Jonsen Maakestad was born October 29, 1829 at Mokestad, Ullensvang, Hordaland, Norway to Jon Mikkelsen Maakestad and Marithe Jonsdatter.

He was baptized at Ullensvang on October 29, 1829. Birth/baptismal record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives on line for Ullensvang, Hordaland, Norway, 1825-1853, page 20, entry #108. Haldor Jonsen. Parents: Jon Michelsen and Marithe Jonsdatter Maakestad. Lists sponsors.

Haldor left Ullensvang, Hordaland, Norway on April 13, 1857 to emigrated to America. He arrived at Quebec, Canada on June 10, 1857 and traveled on to a Norwegian settlement in Lee County, Illinois where he settled.

Believe he chose to use the name Haldor Johnson after emigrating.

Haldor married Isabelle (Ingeborg) Olsdatter on February 27, 1860 at Lee, Illinois. The couple had 7 or 8 children.

Found in the 1860, 1870 censuses at Alto, Lee, Illinois:
1860: Haldo Johnson 32, Emeline Johnson 25

1870: Haldor Johnson 45, Emily Johnson 37, Anna Johnson 14, Martha Johnson 9, Stewart Johnson 8, Joanna Johnson 5, John Johnson 4, Ole Johnson 9 mos.

He became a naturalized citizen on Feburary 6, 1874.

Found in the 1885, 1895 censuses at Scott, Hamilton, Iowa:
1885: Haldor Johnson age 53.

1895: Halder Johnson age 66.

Haldor owned farmland in Hamilton County, Iowa.

He died November 18, 1899 at Ellsworth, Hamilton, Iowa and is buried at the Greenwood Cemetery, Ellsworth, Hamilton, Iowa.

Note: Haldor had 7 siblings and many of them also emigrated to the United States but used the surname Maakestad after emigration.
