The Daily Freeman JournalJack Read, 83, a longtime Stanhope businessman, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday December 26, 2012 at the Stanhope Parish Church, with Pastor Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
Jack Read, son of Harry and Hazel (Snyder) Read, was born May 22, 1932 in Stanhope. He graduated from Stanhope high school and attended Webster City Junior College. On June 22, 1951, he married Shari Pates in Missouri. Jack served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return in 1954, he took ownership of Read Auto in Stanhope from his father, which he operated with his son David until 1992. During this time he was also a rural mail carrier. Jack and his wife Shari lived in Stanhope until last February when they moved to Ames.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shari of Ames; daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Bill Talbot of Ames; their children, Cory Talbot and Kyle Talbot; son and daughter-in-law, David and Jacque Read of Stanhope, their children, Laura Read and Brett Read; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Hage from Ames, Naomi and Bob Lee of Iowa City and Roma Jean and DeWayne Anderson of Colorado.
He was a member of the Stanhope Parish. Jack believed in serving his church and he served as church president and various other positions. He was a former member of the Stanhope Lions Club, the Stanhope Fire Department, the Telephone Board, the Stanhope City Council and was the Mayor of Stanhope at one time. Jack was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed baseball, softball, golf, playing cribbage and other card games and had been known to spoil his grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother-in-law, Floyd Hage.
