John Weldon Ostlund, 85, of Webster City, died Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Hamilton Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, December 26, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, with Pastor Tony Ede officiating. The Ostlund Family will be present at the church at noon to see family and friends. Following the Memorial Service, A Celebration of Life will be held at the Webster City Links Clubhouse.

John was born on October 18, 1924, in Webster City, Iowa, to Newet and Mary (Clelland) Ostlund. John was the youngest of three boys, Bill, Bob and John. He went to elementary school and junior high in Webster City and graduated from Webster City High School in 1942. John was inducted in the U.S. Army Air Force in November of 1942. He proudly served his country in World War II stationed in Europe. He successfully completed 35 missions as a bombardier on board a B17 that was part of the 385th Division of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. John was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Four Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Metal for his courageous service in WWII.

John was united in marriage to Beverly Juhl in Bethany, Missouri, on June 6, 1945. John and Beverly returned to Webster City where they raised four children, Bill, Mindy, John and Janis. John’s primary career was as a salesman for Newell. Together, John and Beverly enjoyed 50 years of marriage until Beverly’s death in 1996. Following his wife’s death, John frequently spent time travelling and visiting his children and grandchildren.

John was an avid golfer and held the title of Webster City Champion 16 times. He was a diehard Lynx, Hawkeye, Cubs, and Yankees Fan. He was a crossword puzzle whiz and enjoyed road trips to various towns in Iowa and across the country. John had a wonderful sense of humor and could bring a smile to anyone’s face no matter what the situation may have been. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, The American Legion Post 191, and the Elks. Most importantly John was a kind, gentle, loving father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, family member, friend and neighbor. He will be greatly missed but forever alive in the hearts of many.

Survivors include his four children, Bill (Marcia) of Jefferson, Iowa, and their children, Andy and Sarah; Mindy (Billy) Harkins of Denver, Colorado, and their daughter Emily; Janis (Tim) Graber of Costa Mesa, California and their children, Matthew (Erin), Jenny (Matt), and T.J.(Erin); John (Beth) of Centreville, Virginia, and their children, Timothy and Michael; six great grandchildren, Megan, Molly, Wyatt, Emily, Katelyn, and Daniel; sister-in-law, Shirley (Don) Doolittle, many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his mother and father, Mary Clelland and Newet Ostlund; his stepfather, Charlie Marsh; his brothers, Bill and Bob; his mother-in-law, Esther Juhl.

Memorial tributes may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City or The American Legion Post 191. Funeral services and arrangements made by Foster Funeral and Cremation of Webster City.
