Arthur Leroy Dayton, 64, of Webster City, died Tuesday October 13, 2009 at Hamilton Hospital in Webster City. A funeral service will be held Saturday 12:30 p.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church in Webster City with Rev. Linda Bibb officiating. Visitation will be at the Boman Funeral Home with the family present from 5 7 p.m. on Friday.

He was born August 4, 1945 in Webster City to Charles & Evelyn (Balsley) Dayton. Art was on the track and football teams at Webster City High School and graduated in 1965. He joined the US Marine Corp after high school. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and received three Purple Hearts while serving in Viet Nam. He received an honorable discharge in 1969 and worked for the next 34 years at Electrolux in Webster City

On December 27, 1969 he married Marcia Rae Schnell in Webster City. Art was very active in veteran's circles. He was the past commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart post 462, Commissioner of Veterans Affairs for Hamilton County, served on the UAW Veterans Commission, and was a member of the Devil Dogs, DAV, VFW, AL, VVA, and MCL. He was involved with veteran's work including but not limited to Vets Day at Knoxville, Homeless Veterans Stand-down in Des Moines, Veterans Home in Marshalltown, monthly meetings with the Rockwell City Corrections Facility Veterans. Veterans work was one of his passions along with his family & friends.

Survivors include: his wife Marcia of 40 years; three daughters Tammy Harris, Cathy Dayton-Baez, Ann Dayton & her special friend Keith Dawson whom Art had known for several years; four grandchildren Shelby, Cody, Sophia & Mateo; sister Sherry (George) Merz; niece Dawn Obrecht & family, all of Webster City; uncles and aunts Roger (Berneta) Balsley and Deloris Balsley all of Webster City, Judy Kunz of Traer & Janice (John) Merz of Fort Dodge; brother-in-law Melvin (Carla) Schnell of Eagle Grove; sisters-in-law Ruth Norris & June (Larry) Larson all of Webster City; many nephews, nieces & friends. He was preceded in death by his sister Sonja, mother, & grandmother Olive Smith.
