Walter F. Detmer, 97, of Webster City, died Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the Hamilton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Vernon Lutheran Church south of Dows. Burial will follow in the Vernon Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center and prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Walter Frederick Detmer, son of Henry and Anna Pfaffenbach Detmer was born on March 1, 1912 on a farm southeast of Blairsburg in Liberty Township. He received his education and graduated from Blairsburg High School. He attended the University of Commerce in Des Moines where he graduated with a degree in business. In 1938, he married Ella Mary Beyer at the Vernon Lutheran Church Parsonage. The couple resided on a farm near Williams, Iowa. Walter's main vocation was as a farmer. He had also worked for three years at Diamond Brothers Grocery in Parkersburg.

Survivors include his wife Ella; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Barbie Detmer of Carpinteria, CA; grandchildren, Colette (Detmer) Cosentino of Ojai, CA; Jeryl (Sami) Detmer of Ogden, UT; and one great grandson, Elias Detmer also of Ogden, UT.

In addition to his parents, Walter was preceded in death by his daughter in infancy, Barbie Detmer; two brothers, Gilbert and George Detmer; and two sisters, Velma Klaver and Esterlene Snoddy.

He was a member of the Vernon Lutheran Church, where he served as treasurer during the building phase of the current church. Walter also loved playing the Banjo, which he played with a group of musicians in the Jewell, Iowa area.
