Webster City Freeman Journal, July 28, 2009

Bonita Hazel Decker Scott, 95, died Wednesday, July 22 2009 at the Bishop Drumm home in Johnston, Iowa. Born March 12, 1914 in Farnhamville, Iowa to Perry Isaac Decker and Fern King Decker, she grew up and lived most of her life in Webster City, Iowa.

In 1942 Bonnie married Willis Goodrich Scott (Scotty) of Webster City, starting their life together in Ft. Worth, TX where Willis served as a flight instructor in the US Army Air Corps. They returned to Webster City in 1945. Willis built and managed the Webster City airport, and formed his own aerial spraying company. They moved onto Farview, the Scott family farm in 1956, farming, aerial crop dusting and raising their children along with pet pigeons, pups and ponies.

Home maker, fine seamstress and tailor, great cook and baker, and partner with Scotty in the Webster City Flying Service and Farview, Bonnie was also an active volunteer with the Hamilton County Home, Cass Red Peppers 4-H Club, Asbury Methodist Church and wherever else she was needed.

After Scotty's death in 1980, Bonnie moved into town, staying active and involved even as macular degeneration progressed. She said "if I can't see the leaves on the trees, I'd better go while I can still see the trees." And she went - tours with friends to China, Europe, and Alaska, adventures in France and Spain with her son Mike, two extended road trips with daughter Jerri to both American coasts, and many travels with friends. Those journeys gave her wonderful memories to ease the long days of her restricted final years. In 1989 she moved to Park Place Independent Senior Living in Des Moines where she gathered more friends, participated in everything and created more than a little mischief including a mock wedding and a very mournful funeral for a fake bird both including her reworked lyrics to familiar songs.

Bonnie leaves sons, Michael, Guy and Blake, daughter Jerri, five grandchildren, and one great grandson. She also counted her 'extended family' Robert and Cheryl Weimann, their children Mikel and Monique and two great-granddaughters. Their loving support was vital to her happiness and well being until she was unable to communicate with them. Bonnie was preceeded in death by her husband, Willis, her parents, sister Thelma Decker Schlosser and brother Raymond Decker.

She'll be remembered for her friendship, wisdom, wonderful spaghetti sauce, crescent rolls, calls to friends with an invitation to ride along wherever her car was going, sense of adventure and her ability to tell and enjoy a good joke.

Bonnie's remains were cremated. Blake and Guy chose to forego a funeral or celebration of her life at this time, so in Bonnie's memory please offer someone a ride, share a batch of cookies, pass on a joke, go while you can still see the trees, give of yourself, make a gift to your favorite charity, share your memories of Bonnie and laugh with your friends.
