Leon Arthur Sheldon, 88, of Webster City, died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice House in Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Foster Funeral and Cremation with Pastor Ray Artrip officiating. Burial will follow at the Graceland Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #191 of Webster City. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Fosters.

Leon Arthur Sheldon, son of Earnest Earl and Viola Pearl Byerley Sheldon was born on October 14, 1920 in El Campo, Texas, the seventh of twelve children. The family moved to Kearney, Nebraska in 1923, and he received his education from the Kearney Community Schools graduating in 1938. On February 20, 1943 he was united in marriage to Joyce Chaney in Kearney, Nebraska where he continued to farm with his father. He enjoyed playing in the fast pitch softball league with his brother Stan.

In 1945 Leon enlisted in the Army, and Joyce joined him while he was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. They returned to Kearney after his discharge in 1946. They moved to Jefferson, Iowa, in 1948 and then to Webster City, Iowa, in 1951 to begin working for Moorman's Feed. He retired from Moorman's in 1981 and then drove school bus for Webster City Schools for a few years. He and Joyce have lived in Webster City for 58 years. In 1983 they bought a motor home and enjoyed traveling and lived in Texas during the winter.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; children, Alan (Judy) Sheldon of Mason City; Kathy (Jim) McNaul of Arden Hills, MN; Ron (Veronica) Sheldon of Long Lake, MN; Nancy (Pat) O'Donnell of Sioux Center; Scott (Janet) Sheldon of Fort Dodge; brothers, Stan (Marj) of Webster City; Carroll and Sid of Kearney, NE; Darrell and Barb of Alamogordo, NM; 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Floyd, Merl, and Harold, and his sisters Beulah, Verna, Doretha, and Violet, and an infant son Leon Arthur and an infant daughter Jacqueline Kay.

He was a member of the Church of Christ, serving as treasurer and a deacon for many years and was a member of the American Legion Post #191, both of Webster City.
