William F. Vance, 86, died Monday, July 23, 2007 at the Hamilton Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 at the First Congregational—U.C.C. with Rev. Howard Hunt officiating. Private burial and graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #191 at Graceland Cemetery.

William Francis Vance, son of Lewis and Pearl Alcorn Vance was born February 28, 1921 on a farm west of Webster City. He received his education in Webster City schools and graduated from Lincoln High in 1938. On June 19, 1943, he married Joyce Frances Talcott at Winfield, Kansas where he was in pilot training with the Army Air Corps. While o active duty during W.W. II, he spent 13 moths in the southwest Pacific area as a pilot flying bombing missions in a B-24 Liberator. After being released from active duty, he spent 19 years in the Air Force Reserve retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. After 45 years of employment with First National Bank, the couple retired to Mesa, AZ in 1983. Mrs. Vance died December 17, 2000 and Bill returned to Webster City.

Bill is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Mark T. Vance of Webster City; Craig and Julie Vance of Des Moines; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret (Peggy) and Dean Baker of Scottsdale, AZ; Caroline and Thomas Taylor of Nevada, MO; granddaughters, Brooke Taylor (David) Duckworth, Angela (Shane) Peed; grandsons, Brandon Taylor, Dean “Casey” Baker III, Lucas (Skye) Brighton, Thomas Brighton Jr.; great-grandsons, Brendon Peed, Haven Baker and Cale Brighton; several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the First Congregational—U.C.C. at Webster City and served on various church committees before moving to Mesa. He was a longtime member of the Webster City Rotary Club and the American Legion. He served on the Webster City school board, the Webster City Police and Fire Retirement board of trustees and the Chamber of Commerce board. He also worked with many other area organizations.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lewis Harold Vance.

The family suggests memorials may be directed to Hamilton County Hospice/Respite, Kendall Young Library, the First Congregational U.C.C. Scholarship Fund or charity of choice.
