Elizabeth Lewis Matthew, 80, Florida
Elizabeth Ann Lewis Matthew died Wednesday October 3, 2007 at home 4208 North A Street Tampa, Florida. She was 80. Liz was born April 19, 1927 in Webster City, Iowa together with her twin sister Virginia Lewis as the daughters of William Benjamin Lewis, M.D. and Faye Cashatt Lewis, M.D. Liz was Homecoming Queen of Lincoln High School and attended Washington University. Her brother Malcolm Lewis, M.D. is now retired from his practice as a general and vascular surgeon and professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

She married William Lynn Matthew of Hutchinson Kansas in 1948 and had four sons including William Benjamin Matthew PhD. a school psychologist, Bakersfield, Calif., Jeffrey Lynn Matthew, a real estate broker, Orlando, Sidney Lewis Matthew, a trial lawyer Tallahassee, and Timothy Oscar Matthew, a newspaper publisher, Tampa.

Liz moved with her family to 129 Buena Vista Drive, Dunedin, Florida in 1963 where she lived until moving to Tampa in 1972. She worked as a juvenile detention officer for the Hillsborough County Juvenile Detention Facility from 1978 until retiring in 1986. She always said she qualified for the job by claiming “to have raised four delinquent sons”. Liz also was a literary agent for aspiring authors. She briefly lived in Vail, Colorado in the late 1980's where she enjoyed the great outdoors and the rugged western personalities with whom she identified. Liz had a special affinity for Native Americans and never failed to champion their cause whenever the opportunity presented itself in casual conversation or heated debate. Liz believed: “The mother of us all is earth, the Father is the sun, the Grandfather is the Creator who bathed us with his mind and gave life to all things; and that we praise our Grandfather for his creation, We share the same breath together with the beasts, the trees, the birds, and man.”

Liz is survived by her four sons, her brother, and her 9 grandchildren: Jill Faye Bechtold, Amy Matthew, Jennifer Stafford, Lauren Marie Matthew, Geoffrey Paul Matthew, Christopher Matthew, Andrew Matthew, Benjamin Matthew, Jessica Matthew. She also is survived by her three great-grandchildren: Skylar Stafford, MacKenzie Stafford, and Sydney Stafford, as well as her nephew Richard Lewis, and nieces Elizabeth Murphy and Cathy Bristow. The services will be held at Brewers Funeral Home, 3328 South Dale Mabry, Tampa, Florida at 11am on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007.
