Dinh Van Hoang, age 61, passed away on Friday, May 18, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 24, 2007 at 5:00 pm at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Iowa. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is entrusted with the arrangements.

Dinh Van Hoang was born in Vietnam on February 28, 1946 to Chan Van Hoang and Inh Thi Hoang. He moved to Laos from Vietnam in 1954. After he finished high school he continued in teaching school from 1962 to 1966. He began his career in teaching and served as principal of an elementary school until 1969. He then served in the army from 1969 to 1971. Dinh married his wife Peng Cam in 1972. After their marriage both husband and wife taught in a private school until 1974. Dinh went to technical school from 1974 to 1976 and served in the telecommunications department until 1980. In 1981 Dinh and his family went to Thailand as refugees and arrived in Des Moines in late 1981. Dinh attended electrical college in Marshalltown, IA and earned his associates degree. They moved to Jewell in 1983 and he worked for Land O’ Lakes in Ellsworth, IA from 1983 to 1989 and worked at Frigidaire in Webster City, IA until the present. He also earned his U.S. citizenship in 1989. Dinh was also a member of The T’ay H’ouamx Chae Diao Society.

Dinh is survived by his wife, Peng of Jewell; sons, Lom (Kellie) Cavan of Jewell, Vong Hoang of Burnsville, MN, Long Hoang of Des Moines, and Lath (Kori Hobbs) Hoang of St. Paul, MN; his granddaughters Makayla and Hailey; his sister, Cuom Thi Cam of Des Moines, IA; and 6 half sisters and 4 half brothers. He was preceeded in death by his parents and one brother.
