Ramona E. Carthey, 83, a resident at Penn Hall, passed away Thursday evening, December 11, 2008 in the emergency room of Chambersburg Hospital. Prior to residing at Penn Hall, Dr. and Mrs. Carthey resided at Luther Ridge near Chambersburg and were residents of Newburg, PA for 33 years. Born April 1, 1925 in Blairsburg, she was a daughter of the late John Samuel and Iva Mae Bartlett Heffner. Mrs. Carthey was a graduate of the Blairsburg High School and received a BA Degree in Music from the University of Northern Iowa. Following graduation, she was a vocal music teacher in Marengo, IA. She continued her graduate studies in library science at the University of Iowa, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, and Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, PA. Following receipt of her certification, she served as the librarian at Greencastle-Antrim High School, Greencastle, PA, for 12 years prior to retirement.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church near Chambersburg and a former member at First Presbyterian Church in Shippensburg for more than 30 years. Mrs. Carthey was a PEO member for 50 years and served as Chaplain. She served on the Newburg Borough Council and as a Judge of Elections. Other memberships include the Shippensburg University Faculty Wives, the Shippensburg Library Board, numerous Education Associations, and the Shippensburg Historical Society, where she served as a Docent. Mrs Carthey was an avid reader, enjoyed collecting antiques, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Wilbur O. Carthey, whom she married May 21, 1949; two daughters, Ann V. Straley and husband Edward J. of Shippensburg, and Lisa B. Fichera and husband Michael L. of New Tripoli, PA; three grandchildren, Joshua E. Straley and wife Amy of Elizabethtown, PA, Beth A. Straley Houser and husband Jason of State College, PA, and Christina E. Straley of Shippensburg, PA; two great-granddaughters, Victoria and Emily Straley, both of Elizabethtown; and a sister, Marjorie Beth Heffner of Cedar Rapids.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, December 17, 2008 in the Penn Hall Chapel, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Beth Miller will officiate. Friends will be received at a reception immediately following the service. Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 417 Phoenix Drive, Suite A, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
