Jay Russell Ouverson, 71, of Clear Lake, died Friday, September 19, 2008 of a brain tumor diagnosed in Sept. 2007. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m.., Tuesday, (September 23, 2008) at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave North, with Reverend Diana Hoover officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M Monday (September 22, 2008) at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St, Clear Lake, and also one hour prior to the service. Memorials are suggested to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.

Jay Russell Ouverson was born August 15, 1937 in Mason City, Iowa, son of Leonard (Ding) and Ellen Mae (Westover) Ouverson. He graduated from Clear Lake, High School in 1955 and farmed with his father. He joined the Air Force in Feb. 1957 and was discharged on Jan 1963, in Empire, Michigan where he met his wife, Marty. He served in Sado Shima, Japan during his service. He married Marty Lemen on June 17, 1961 in Traverse City, Michigan. They moved back to Clear Lake briefly, then Mason City where he worked at Arnold's Motor Supply as a parts man and the Globe Gazette as an advertising salesman. He joined Mid America Publishing and was transferred to Spencer, Estherville, and Jefferson. When the paper changed hands Jay worked at the Bee and Herald in Jefferson. Then they moved to Webster City where he worked for the Freeman Journal, PSI and Lambi Chevrolet until he retired in 2002 and moved to Clear Lake. He helped Dennis Preston on his farm until last fall when he became ill. Jay enjoyed his family and grandchildren the most. He loved watching the NASCAR races. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on several committees. He taught ALPHA classes several times at Asbury Methodist Church in Webster City and United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. He became certified as a Lay Leader which he was very proud of. He was a director, along with his wife Marty, of Congregational Care at the church for the last 5 years. He enjoyed calling on patients as he always was a "people" person. They loved to camp in their motor home and spent the last 5 winters in Weslaco, Texas. He was a long time member of Kiwanis in Jefferson and Webster City.

Jay is survived by his mother, Ellen Mae Ouverson of Clear Lake, his wife of 47 years, Marty, 3 sons, Brian (Mary) from Stratford and their children, Spencer Ouverson of Boone, Emily Gallagher of Ames, Cassie of Fort Dodge, David, Dylan, and Mariah Trammell of Stratford; Todd of Clear Lake and his children Stephanie and Casey Ouverson of Des Moines, his fianc, Chris Dirks and her son, Braiden; and Eric (Elizabeth) from Webster City and their children Emma and Erin. Also sister, Dianne and brother-in-law Marlin Miller of Clear Lake, brother-in-law James Thomson and sister-in-law, Janet Thomson of Traverse City, Michigan, brother-in-law, Ted Lemen and sister-in-law, Cecile Lemen of Denver, Colorado, his aunt, Lucile Westover, Clear Lake, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Ouverson.
