DeVan C. Hershey, age 83 of Stanhope, formerly of Boone, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 4, 2008 at the Stanhope Parish in Stanhope. Rev. Suzie Moore will officiate. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone with full military honors at the graveside by the Boone Veterans Council.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 3, at the Schroeder ~ Walter Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 4-8 p.m. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Stanhope Parish in Stanhope Friday morning from 10 a.m. to the time of service. Memorials may be given to Stanhope Parish in Stanhope.

DeVan was born on April 8, 1924 in Beatrice, Nebraska, the son of DeVan and Clara (Ryslavy) Hershey. He graduated from Beatrice High School. DeVan attended Nebraska State Teachers College at Vesta, Nebraska and received his Bachelor of Arts in Education. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945. DeVan was married to Freda M. Albers on May 27, 1951 in Vesta, Nebraska. DeVan taught English in schools in Nebraska for several years. The couple then moved to Griswold, Iowa where he continued to teach, then moved to Boone where they lived for over 40 years. DeVan taught English at Boone High School in Boone and then worked at the 3M Company in Ames as a press operator. In 1990 the couple moved to Stanhope where they resided.

DeVan was a member of the Stanhope Parish in Stanhope, and a member of the Lions Club of Stanhope. He enjoyed listening to music and coin collecting and his 3 cats, Fussy, Bugger, and Blue.

DeVan is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Freda; his son, Van Hershey and his brother, Billy Warren. He is survived by his son, Victor L. Hershey (Kimberly) of Nevada; 5 grandchildren, Valarie Moore (Gabriel) of Perry; Charles “Chuck” Hershey (Kim) of Cambridge; Dustin Baker of Stanhope; Venessa Hershey Olson of Fort Dodge; Lacey Van De Krol (Craig) of Des Moines; 10 great grandchildren, Taylor Moore; Austin Moore; Jayden Moore; Noah Moore and Elijah Moore all of Perry; Jeremiah Baker of Newton; Isaiah Baker of Ames; Ezra Van De Krol of Des Moines; Lillian and Zakie of Fort Dodge; 1 cousin, Virginia of California.

Schroeder ~ Walter Funeral Home at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone is in charge of the arrangements.
