Ethel P. Smith passed away on Saturday afternoon, 08 March 2008 at Southfield Wellness Center in Webster City, IA at the age of 94.

Ethel Pearl Hoover was born 12 Dec 1913 on the family farm near Evanston in Washington Township, Webster County, IA, to Edward E. and Carrie A. Hoover. She attended a country school near the family farm. On Sat. 27 Aug 1932, Ethel was united in marriage to Leo Gibson (Gib) Smith at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Duncombe, IA. To this union, six children were born: Geraldine (Darrell) Ackerman of Blairsburg, IA; Donna (Bo) Brasfield of Thorndale, TX; Rosemary (Tom) Thomas of Aiken, SC; Sharon Martinez, and Karl Smith, both of Fort Dodge. In addition to the surviving five children, Gib and Ethel’s son, Leo Gibson Smith, Jr. was born and passed away on 26 Dec 1945.

Gib and Ethel Smith farmed near Lehigh until their retirement in 1969. They spent nearly 30 years of their retirement in Lawrence County, AR, where they made many dear friends. Gib passed away on 19 March 2005 in Walnut Ridge, AR, and Ethel moved back to Webster City in 2006 to be near her children.

In addition to the five children named above, Ethel is survived by one sister, Mrs. Eva Hoover Hively, of Fort Dodge, 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Ethel was a quiet lady who loved to bird watch, garden, quilt and knit, and listen to the Lawrence Welk show on Saturday night. She made countless quilts and afghans for her many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She enjoyed so much spending time with her large family and watching them grow and she left behind for them a legacy of love and respect. For her entire life, she was a member of the Methodist Church both in Iowa and in Arkansas.

Other than her husband, Gib, and son, Leo Gibson, Jr., Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Alfred and Harold Hoover, and six sisters, Edna Draper, Elizabeth Draper, Dorothy Wilson, Buelah Bangert, Lois Gerard, and Cecil Hoover.

The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the Gunderson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. L.J. Hartley officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Gunderson Funeral Home
