Norma Randau, of Story City, died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames following complications from CHF.

Norma was born March 19, 1921 to John and Millie (Baldus) Springman on her grandfather's farm north of Jewell. Norma had 2 brothers, Owen (who died in infancy) and Lewis. In 1926 Norma moved with her family to the farm west of Story City. She attended Center School and graduated from Story City High School in 1939. She attended State Teachers College (now UNI) and AIB. During college she played trumpet in the Junior Farm Bureau Instrumental Quartet.

On March 28, 1943, Norma married Merrill H. Randau at Grace EUB Church in Story City. They resided south of Ames for 1 year, and then returned to Norma's family farm to form a dairy partnership with her parents. Merrill and Norma were blessed with 5 daughters. They enjoyed nearly 37 years of marriage before Merrill's death on Feb. 9, 1980.

In addition to being a homemaker, Norma worked at a munitions plant during WWII, and also as an insurance sales representative for the past 35 years. She was a member of Grace UM Church and held several offices throughout the years in Homebuilders, Afternoon Circle, and Senior Choir. Norma was also a member of Owl Country Club, ICCI, Songbirds Choir, Roland-Story MAST, and the Story City Historical Society. She served many years as an election official and was an avid campaigner for democratic candidates. Norma enjoyed gardening and yard work. She was an avid fan of any activity that her children and grandchildren were involved in, rarely missing a game or concert.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers. She is survived by 5 daughters, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson, 1 sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews. Survivors include Sharon (Mike) Hilleman of Sioux Center; and their children Christie (Paul) Hocamp, Atlantic; Heidi (John) Ernst, and their son Joseph Michael, Olathe, KS; and Scott (Courtney) Hilleman, Del Ray Beach, FL: Patricia (Steve) Christensen, and their sons Lars and Jacob, all of Sycamore, IL: Cynthia (Gordon) Accola, and their sons Anthony (Amanda), Derek, and Colton, all of Ames: Kathy (Bruce) Twedt, Story City; and their daughters Jennifer (Chris) Weis, North Liberty; and Melissa Twedt, Story City: Mary Lou Geneser, Granger; and her children Ashley, Independence, MO; Jerilyn, and Lucas, Granger: and Bethine Springman, Cedar Rapids.

Visitation is Friday from 4-8 pm, family present 6-8 pm, and funeral services are Saturday at 10 a.m. Both will be held at Grace Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Grace Church, Center Cemetery, or the American Heart Association. Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City has been entrusted with the arrangements.
