Edward T. Hoobin, Jr., 76, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at the New Homestead, Guthrie Center, Iowa, after living a life of remarkable grace and courage. His buoyant spirit and heroic attitude in the face of a 20-year struggle with Parkinson's Disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.
Ed graduated from Des Moines North High School in 1952 and attended Iowa State University. He remained a lifelong Iowa State Cyclones fan.
Ed and his wife Jannis traveled widely, including an around-the-world trip in (year). During the winter months, they often went to Arizona, California, or Florida. But Ed's favorite place on earth no doubt was his lakeside home on Lake Panorama. It was there that he shared his love of boating and water skiing with his family and numerous friends.
Family was very important to Ed, and nothing made him happier than taking children and grandchildren water skiing or sharing an evening campfire on the beach. He also enjoyed golfing, snow skiing and fishing. He was a member of the Panora United Methodist Church.
Ed retired in 1994 from his position as a salesman for Xerox Corporation. He began his work career at Lenox, where he was employed for 20 years. He went on to work for Herschel Manufacturing in Indianola before becoming a salesman for Sperry and then Xerox in Des Moines.
Ed and Jannis were married on October 4, 1974, in West Des Moines. Ed previously was married to Druzella Hanson of Des Moines for 17 years.
Ed is survived by his wife, Jannis Hoobin of Panora; daughter, Jessica (Mark) Pine of Urbandale; son, Jeffrey (Linda Biermann-Hoobin) of Johnston; daughter, JoEllen (Mark) Halteman of Pottstown, PA; daughter, Jennifer (Mike) McCannon of Steamboat Springs, CO; step-daughter, Jennifer (David) Hicks of San Diego, CA; and step-son, John (Elaine) Soper of South Bend, IN; seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Huffman of Des Moines; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward T. and Anita (Allen) Hoobin, Sr., and sisters, Anita Hudson and Elizabeth Fertig.
