Cancer which made an unexpected strike too the life of Mrs. C. F. (Margaret) Greenfield Friday night. Although the presence of the disease had been known for two years, her family and friends were totally unprepared for her death.
Born Margaret Louise Corbett on Christmas Day in 1921, she was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Corbett. Following graduation from Bayard Hight school, Margaret attended Duschene College in Omaha where she was graduated in 1943.
After working for three years, she was married to Coral F. Greenfield on October 16, 1946. From that time until her death she had lived in Bayard where she was a homemaker and community activist.
Mrs. Greenfield served on the Bayard Library board, was a past president of the Bayard Woman's Club and she was a director of the West Central Mental Health board. An active politician, she has served as president of the Guthrie County Republican Women's club and she was a devout Catholic having been a member of the St Patrick's Church all of her life.
She had entered the Guthrie County hospital last Thursday suffering from what was thought to be a virus infection. She showed improvement Thursday night and Friday but that evening her condition worsened and she died before midnight.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in her honor Monday at 11 a m from the St Patrick's Church with the Pastor, Rev Frank Palmer, officiating. He was assisted by Rev James Freeman and Rev Thomas DeCarlo. Miss Lula Garnes served as organist and a choir sang.
At the conclusion of the service James Greenfield, her oldest son, eulogized his mother.
The Casket was carried by Leonard Siedhoff, B D Laughery, Edward Lyons, Elwood Battles, Warren Watkins, and Fred Nance.
Interment was made in the Willow Township cemetery.
A Rosary and Scripture Service was held Sunday evening at the Starling Funeral Home.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Greenfield is survived by sons James and John both of Des Moines, and a daughter, Jan, and a son Jerry, both at home.
