Larry Gene Paterson, age 76, of Panora, IA formerly of Woodward, IA, passed away Sunday, September 09, 2012 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Larry had been a fighter his entire life, beating cancer three times and surviving health issues.

Larry was born January 7, 1936 in Perry, IA the son of John William “Bill” and Jennie Rose (Mendon) Paterson. He grew up on the family farm in Woodward, IA on “Paterson’s Corner.” He graduated from Woodward High School in 1954.

Larry married the love of his life Loretta Grove on November 9, 1956 in Woodward, IA, and to this union two sons were born. Larry entered the United States Navy on January 23, 1956 and was discharged on April 14, 1961 after four years of active duty and two years in the reserves. He served on the USS New Jersey and the Douglas H. Fox. After his discharge, he returned home to fulfill his lifelong passion to farm and own his own trucking business. Larry enjoyed camping, fishing, NASCAR, visiting the Casinos… even when he didn’t win. He loved spending time with his family especially the grandchildren cherishing all the special family times spent together. He taught his family by example the importance of being a loving spouse, the value of hard work, helping others and being a good neighbor and friend. He was a very social person who enjoyed having a beer with friends and family. You would never find Larry without a smile on his face and always had a positive outlook on life. Even in his last days, you never heard him complain.

Larry was a member of the Woodward American Legion and the Woodward Methodist Church. Larry was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed. Larry is remembered by his devoted wife of nearly 56 years, Loretta of Panora, IA. Two sons: Ronald “Buzz” and wife Jean Paterson of Storm Lake, IA; Robert “Bob” and wife Beck Paterson of Guthrie Center, IA. Five grandchildren: Maria Paterson, Ryne and wife Jess Paterson, Rylee Paterson, Jordan Albright and Bryce Paterson. One Brother: George and wide Ida Belle Paterson of Iowa City, IA; nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law Don League and Mary Grove, and grandparents-in-law Clarence and Mary L. Grove.

A Celebration of Life gathering for friends and family will be held September 22, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the Woodward Legion Hall in Woodward, IA.
