CONTRIBUTOR: Connie (Kelly) Ellis - Kelly descendant and researcher

Eliza Kelly was born August 7, 1847 in Green Township, Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio and died in her home in Stuart, Iowa on December 20, 1935 at the age of 88 years, 4 months, and 13 days. In her parental home she was the seventh child of nine children, of whom only one sister is living.

On September 12, 1867, she was united in marriage to David K. Sarbaugh. He preceded her in death one year ago the 2nd of this month. They had no children, so their devotion turned very much to one another. They were permitted to live together in this happy relationship for a little over sixty-seven years. Naturally Mrs. Sarbaugh was very lonely since his death, often expressing her desire to be with him again soon.

During the early part of their married life, Mr. and Mrs. Sarbaugh lived near McGregor, Iowa in Clayton County. In the year 1872 they moved to Adair county living in the vicinity of Stuart, Iowa until 17 years ago when they moved to Stuart.

Mrs. Sarbaugh was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Chuch of Stuart and a regular attender of the services as long as she was in reasonably good health.

She was of a retiring nature, loving the quiet of her home. She was a good neighbor and enjoyed the giving and taking of the little acts of kindness with her neighbors.

She leaves to mourn her death, her sister, Mrs. Emma Watkins of Waukon, Iowa and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service was in Buckley and Bufkins Funeral Home Sunday at 3:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. Roy E. Gugsler. Burial was in the Stuart Cemetery.

NOTE FROM THE TRANSCRIBER: In addition to the obituaries for Eliza (Kelly) Sarbaugh and David K.Sarbaugh sent to me in 1981 by Mrs. Esta Wilson of Stuart, Iowa, there was a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Sarbaugh, and a picture of their home which was located at 120 North Adair Street. Mrs. Wilson stated that in 1981 the home was still occupied and it was in good condition. She also included another clipping from the newspaper which was from the Stuart newspaper which said:
LARGE INHERITANCE TAX FROM STUART ESTATE

What was probably the largest inheritance tax ever paid to the state of Iowa from the estate of a Stuart resident was paid Wednesday when C.P. Knox, executor of the D.K. Sarbaugh estate, took a check for $5,461.84 to Des Moines and turned it over to the State Treasurer.

Mr. Sarbaugh, a long time resident of Stuart and vicinity, was a successful farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Sarbaugh had no children and the estate was distributed to nieces and nephews. The state exacts a ten per cent tax on an estate when it is not left to immediate members of the deceased family.

1. William Morton Kelly (1833-1907) who married Sarah Lewis. (This is the line of the transcriber)
