Obituary for Frank Hippen

Frank Hippen was born December 27, 1870 at Aurich Eastfriesland Germany. When a boy of 14 years of age, he came to America and worked on a farm in German township. Here he grew up to manhood. He was joined in holy wedlock with Dena Kurtzleben March 9, 1893, making their home together first on a farm in German township until they moved on their own farm in Pleasant Valley township where they lived for 32 years until their retirement to Wellsburg in the spring of 1939. The Lord blessed their union with 12 children of whom 5 preceded the father in death in infancy. Ever since the spring of 1943 his health -- impaired so that during -- the summer he was confined to his home in the month of September -- condition of his health became more alarming because a serious malady had developed making him a confined invalid of the home. Whatever medical aid was applied seemd to be of no avail giving only temporary relief. Indeed we were to observe how "man proposes but God disposes" Who had taken the deceased in the school of suffering only to be refined in the furnace of affliction. Many spiritual trials -- his faith, and prayers and tears gave evidence of a repented life and how precious in the sight of the Lord is a redeemed soul, and how important it is to possess the definite assuance of salvation. Courageously he would confess and admonish his beloved children at his bedside to seek Jesus for their personal Savior now, while the time of grace is at hand.

God in his wise providence released him from all suffering when he peacefully fell asleep on Sunday, January 14th, at 3:30 a.m. His earthly pilgrimage has come to its termination bringing his age to 73 years and 19 days. By the grace of God they were privilged to share together lifes joys and sorrow for fifty years. Besides his griefstricken companion he leaves to mourn his departure his seven surviving children, three daughters and four sons: they are: Grace, Mrs. John Geiken of Wellsburg, Iowa; Jake Hippen of Wellsburg, Iowa; Ella, Mrs. Sico Luchtenburg of Grundy Center, Iowa; Dora, Mrs. Fred Harms of Grundy Center, Iowa; Herman Hippen of Wellsburg, Iowa; John Hippen of Aplington, Iowa; and Henry Hippen of Wellsburg, Iowa. Also 29 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchidren. Three brothers also lament his departure; Harm Hippen and William Hippen of Wilmette, So. Dak. and John Hippen of Sioux Falls, So. Dak.

The congregation of which he was a faithful member also will preserve him a faithful memory. May the God of all -- the bereaved -- and prepare everyone for a blessed end.

The Reverend John E. Drake, D.D., of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was in charge of the funeral because of illness of the -- pastor.

Those from a distance attending the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. John Hippen and son Edward, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hippen and son Dennis from Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. John Tapper from Buffalo Center; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Tapper from Webster City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Harm Greenfield; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Greenfield; Mr. and Mrs. John Sailor; Mr. and Mrs. Dan Greenfield; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Greenfield; Mr. and Mrs. Rollie Bullerner; Mr. and Mrs. John Butterwick; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Miller; Mr. and Mrs. Okko Jaspers; Mr. and Mrs. Harm Kruse; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kruse; Mr. and Mrs. James Ruter all from Ackley, Iowa, and many more relatives and friends from around Wellsburg.
