Richard W. Kiewiet Dies At Hospital

Richard W. Kiewiet died at 1:15 Thursday afternoon at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. He suffered a heart attack at his home Monday night and was taken to the hospital. A second attack Thursday resulted in his death. He had been in fairly good health up to the time he was stricken. He was 71 years old last October.

Mr. Kiewiet was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kiewiet. He was born near Forreston, Ill., October 24, 1885[sic]. He came to Grundy county with his parents when he was a small child. The family moved on a farm about a mile north of Holland, and Richard grew up there. He was a member of a family of nine children.

On November 28, 1918, Richard Kiewiet and Dena Sealman were married. They started housekeeping on a farm a half mile west and 1 1/2 miles north of Holland. They lived there for 31 years, after which they moved to Grundy Center in 1949 and this remained their home ever since.

Mr. Kiewiet was a long time member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian church. He was a member of the County Triple A committee several years. He served as treasurer of the Grundy REA for 12 years. He was also a former director of the Farmers Savings Bank in Grundy Center.

Funeral services were held at one o'clock Saturday at the Engelkes Funeral Home in Grundy Center and later at the Colfax Presbyterian church. Rev. Wiert Eekhoff officiated at the services. Burial was in the Colfax church cemetery. There was a large attendance at the church services.

Surviving are the widow, one son and three daughters. The son Donald resides on a farm near Cedar Falls. The daughters are Mrs. Raymond Wolthoff, Grundy Center; Mrs. Frank Luchtenburg, Cedar Falls; and Mrs. Dean Robertson, Grundy Center. There are seven grandchildren.

Other surviving members of the family are two brothers, Will of Buffalo Center and Fred of New Hartford. Mrs. Will Tack is the only surviving sister. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
