Grundy Woman Is Killed In Car Collision

Mrs. Philip Sunkle From Felix Twp. Is Victim In Car Collision Saturday Night

Mrs. Phillip Sunkle from Felix township died on the way to the hospital at Marshalltown Saturday evening from injuries which she received in an automobile collision at the intersection of Primary 14 and the Liscomb road 14 miles north of Marshalltown. In the car with her were her husband, who was driving, and their two children, Earl, 4, and Mary Lou, aged 2. Mr. Sunkle received a puncture wound over his right eye and one wrist was sprained; the little boy received a broken left leg and the little girl, who was being held on her mother's lap, received an injury on her head. All four were riding in the front seat of the car. The injured were picked up by another car and taken to the hospital at Marshalltown. Mrs. Sunkle died on the way without having regained consciousness.

Others Injured in Second Car
The other car in the collision was driven by Norvall Rockhill from Marshalltown. With him were Earl Heidelbaugh, owner of the car, and his wife from Marshalltown, and Mrs. Wilma Baer from Marshalltown.

Most critically hurt of those in the Marshalltown car was Mrs. Baer. She received fractures of the pelvis in four or five places and her right leg was broken. Mr. Heidelbaugh's back and his left pelvis were injured.

Driver of Car Charged With Drunkenness
Rockhill, driver of the car, was arrested shortly after the accident for failure to report the accident. Later he was accused of having been drunk. The highway patrolmen said that Rockhill ran away from the scene of the accident to the farm of his uncle nearby who later took him to town. Rockhill admitted to the officers that he had drank several bottles of beer before the accident and that he drank several more after he returned to Marshalltown.

The Sunkle family were on their way to Marshalltown. The car which Rockhill was driving was going in the opposite direction. Sunkle states that the Rockhill car was wobbling from side to side of the road. The driver later explained the reason the car wobbled when he tried to stop it was because the brakes were not working. Rockhill is in jail in Marshalltown.

Sunkles Live on Green Farm
The Sunkle family the past year lived on the Clifford Green farm in Felix township and he was working for Mr. Green. The family lived in a tenant house on the place. Mrs. Sunkle was 32 years old.

Rockhill Given 30 Days in Jail
Norval Rockhill, driver of the car which is blamed for the collision, was given a sentence of 30 days in the Marshall county jail for failing to report an accident. The municipal court judge in Marshalltown who sentenced him stated that 30 days was the limit he could give him under the charge filed. He stated that other charges could be filed later.

Norval Rockhill is a son of John Rockhill, living two miles south of Conrad. Norval was born and raised there and lived at home until he married a Marshalltown girl a few years ago.
