Obituary of William Harrison Day
Wm. Harrison Day, a pioneer resident of Whitten and vicinity, died at his home in Whitten, Jan. 24th, 1916, after a long illness, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and one day, following a paralytic stroke several days prior to his death from which he did not rally.
He was a native of Wisconsin where he enlisted with the Union army in 1862 with the 33rd Wisconsin regiment in which he served faithfully to the end of the war when he received an honorable discharge Aug. 10th, 1865.
On Nov. 25th, 1865 he was married to Sarah A. Raine in New Diggings, Wis. To this union there was born 13 children, four of whom died in infancy and one son, Jas., dying in young manhood after the family came to Iowa. The remaining children are: Mrs. Edith Cowell and Maggie Nelson of Eldora; Mrs. Anna Weaver, Mrs. Edna Hauser, one son Marvin and the Misses Bessie and Hilda Day all of Whitten, who with the faithful wife were at the bedside when the end came.
In 1883 he, with his family, came to Iowa and settled on a farm in Southwest Felix township, where he lived for several years after which he moved to Hardin county. About 14 years ago he moved to Whitten where he has since been engaged in the dray and livery business with his son also operating the Whitten hotel.
Deceased has been a kind and faithful husband and father and a patient sufferer. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, seven children, 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, together with a host of friends who will miss "Uncle Bill" as he was familiarly called.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hawn, at the family home Wednesday, p.m. at 1:30 and the remains laid to rest in the Benson cemetery.
