Gratus Geerdes Services Held

Gratus G. Geerdes, 81, of Ackley, passed away Friday, September 29, at the Presbyterian Church in Ackley.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 2, at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock with Rev. Mike Lerud officiating.

Interment was in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery.

Gratus was born July 31, 1912, in Steamboat Rock the son of Geerd and Antje Riekena Geerdes. He attended rural Hardin County schools.

On June 30, 1937, he was united in marriage to Ruth Doyle at Steamboat Rock. Then on February 26, 1972, he married Mildred Ferrell Evans at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

He was a farmer until December of 1982 when he moved to Ackley and then worked at the Oakwood Cemetery until August of 1992. He attended the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; three brothers, Ben, Jake, Alfred; and a sister, Bessie Bleeker.

Survivors include a son, Don of Wellsburg; brother, Edward of Ackley; two sisters, Verna Wils of Ackley and Freda Harms of Steamboat Rock; step-son, Don Evans of Mason City; step-daughters, Linda Bradley of Steamboat Rock; 7 step-grandchildren; 6 step-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Lucille Pierson.

Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home in Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.

The family of Gratus Geerdes would like to express our heartfelt thanks to our relatives and friends for all the kindnesses extended to us in the way of cards, food, visits, memorials, flowers, prayers, and phone calls during Gratus's illness and in our time of sorrow. We would like to say thanks to the Northeast Iowa Hospice and especially Jean Wulf for the special care given Gratus. A special thank you also to Pastor Lerud for his many visits and comforting works; Sue, Royce, and Jo for the beautiful music; the pallbearers, ushers, and ladies who served the lunch. It means so much to live in a caring community and all these acts of kindness will always be remembered. God bless you all.
