Herb Ballard, Former Banker Here, Dies

Funeral services for G. H. "Herb" Ballard, 91, of Ackley, were held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley. Burial was held in the Wall Lake Cemetery at Wall Lake.

Mr. Ballard passed away on Saturday at University hospitals in Iowa City.

Survivors are his wife, Florence; a son, William of Silver City, NM; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ballard was in the banking business for more than 38 years, including 20 in Ackley and 18 in Wellsburg.

Brandt-Fritz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Herb Ballard, Retired Local Banker, Dies

George Herbert Ballard of Ackley was born on the family farm south of Wall Lake, Iowa, on May 10, 1891, to William H. and Nancy Wolivert Ballard.

Herb died on April 16 following an accidental fall at home, at the age of 91 years, 11 months, and six days.

Herb grew up and received his education in the Wall Lake area with his 12 brothers and sisters. In 1916, Mable Bollman became the wife of Herb in Wall Lake and they had one son, William. In 1965, after 49 years of marriage, Mable died following an illness. In 1972, Herb married Florence Eggert Probasco in Ackley.

Herb was a member of the Mason Fountain Lodge No. 219 in Ackley and received his 50 year membership pin.

Herb served the people of the Ackley and Wellsburg areas as a banker for over 38 years working the Ackley State Bank and Peoples Savings Bank.

Herb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Ackley for 46 years and was very faithful in his attendance each week.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Mable; and his 12 brothers and sisters.

Herb leaves his second wife, Florence; his son, William and wife Margaret of Silver City, New Mexico; two grandchildren, Bruce and wife Daria of Longmont, Colorado and Sandra and husband, Don Donovan of Silver City, New Mexico; six great-grandchildren, Brad Ross and Lauren Ballard of Longmont, Colo., and Brian, Michael and Pamella Donovan of Silver City, New Mexico.

Memorial services were held in the First Presbyterian Church of Ackley at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19 with the Rev. Donald L. Martin officiating.

Mrs. Calvin Brizzi was organist and soloist was Elmer Jones. Ushers were Lester Bullock and Paul Humke.

Serving as pallbearers were Charley Ryken, Calvin Brizzi, Woodford Fisher, Frank Hoffmann, Lowell Bentley and Harold Kotenbrink. Honorable pallbearers were Elmer Flessner, Rudolf Tonjes, Ernest Bruggman, Henry J. Janssen and Leonard Johnson.
