Mrs. Meike Doyen

On Thursday afternoon, November 14, Mrs. Meike Doyen, aged eighty-seven years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Albers.

The deceased was born Meike Jurgens Santjer, in Ostfriesland, August 3, 1814, and came to America in 1867, living first at Ackley and removing from there to the vicinity of Alden in 1878. The husband died here seventeen years ago, since which time the wife and mother has found a comfortable and happy old age in the family of her daughter. Having been a member of the Evangelical society from her earliest girlhood, she has found great solace in the religion of her youth during her declining years and has counted it one of the great privileges of her life to be in a community with so may people of her own faith. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Doyen, of whom four, Mrs. A. Albers, of this place, Mrs. John Douglas of Chicago, and H. and J. Doyen, of Wellsburg, survive her.

The new bell gave its first requium Thursday evening in announcing the age of the departed, according to the custom of the church, which, being one stroke for each year of life, took the best part of half an hour in the tolling. Funeral services were held at the home and at the church Sunday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Rixman, and the remains laid to rest beside those of Mr. Doyen in the resting place on the hill.
