Biography
Dean L. Charlton, 82, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center from complications of Alzheimer's.

He was born August 15, 1929 in East Moline, Illinois, the son of Hugh and Grace Ames Charlton. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Schmitz December 29, 1954 in Dumont, Minnesota.

Mr. Charlton was employed by John Deere & Company for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean Conflict. Dean was a long time member of Hagerman Baptist Church, where he was the youth leader and a Sunday school teacher. He coached city and church league softball for many years. Dean enjoyed woodworking, while living on the acreage with his family near Dike for 33 years.

Dean is survived by his wife of Waterloo; two sons, Randy (Rita) Charlton of Chatfield, Minnesota, and Steven Charlton of Cedar Falls; four daughters, Debra (Bruce) Hayes of Dike, Diana (Matthew) Murphy of Altoona, Lori (Roger) Temp of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, and Pamela (William) Arndorfer of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Robert Charlton; and three sisters, Virginia Louise Stone, Mary Scarbrough, and Dorothy Canakes.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Hagerman Baptist Church, with private family burial in Dike Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial fund to be established at a later date.
