Mary Dee Hurley, 70, of Reinbeck, passed away at her home on September 15, 2019. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, from 5-7 PM at French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 19, at 10:30 AM at French-Hand Funeral Home with Reverend Joel Love officiating. Visitation will resume an hour prior to the service. Inurnment at Reinbeck Cemetery will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Bend Humane Society in memory of Mary’s love for animals. Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, French-Hand Chapel is taking care of Mary and her family.

Mary Dee (Hass) Hurley was born on September 22, 1948, in Burlington, IA, to her parents Edward and Ruth (Lewis) Hass. She attended Burlington High School graduating with the class of 1967. Mary was united in marriage to Paul J. Hurley on October 5, 1968, and they were blessed with two sons, Tom and Patrick. She and Paul made their home briefly in Waterloo until moving to Reinbeck in 1973. Mary worked briefly at Black’s Department Store in Waterloo and after moving, opened her fabric store in Reinbeck, A Woman’s Place, which sold sewing related items and she was known for her making and hanging of custom drapes. She later went on to work at The Reinbeck Courier performing secretarial duties and worked at Nana Rosa’s also. Mary finished her professional career as a secretary working for Robert Thompson, later retiring.

Mary was a vibrant soul that knew just about everyone in Reinbeck. She was a proud member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary for many years. Mary also belonged to the Reinbeck Theatre Guild, helping perform many shows and she taught drama at the Reinbeck High School for a number of years. She loved her sons deeply alongside her many faithful furry companions throughout the years. Most days recently, you would have found Mary enjoying some of her favorite shows, especially Johnny Carson.

Mary is survived by her loving sons: Tom Hurley of Peoria, IL, and Patrick Hurley of Reinbeck; beloved feline friend Daisy Duke. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Jane Richardson, brother-in-law’s Jim and Mike Hurley, and Steve Richardson.
