Former Dike Merchant Dead

D. M. Tobias Passes Away at Rochester, Minn., Following Operation

D. M. Tobias, for many years a leading merchant of Dike, died at Rochester, Minn., last Sunday night following an operation for hernia. The operation was performed about ten days previous to his death and he was thought to be getting along as well as could be hoped for when complications set in which caused his death.

Mr. Tobias was about sixty years of age. He was one of the first merchants to locate in the town of Dike when that town was in its infancy coming there from Hudson. About eleven years ago he sold his business to Hans Kelsen and has since lived a retired life. Mrs. Tobias died in 1917.

Mr. Tobias was a man of exceptional business ability and was highly respected by all for his honorable and upright character.

Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Tobias. They are: Mrs. John Schultz, living in Canada; John of Great Falls, Mont.; Mrs. Jeppe Schultz, Mrs. Hans Kelsen, Mrs. Percy Lyon and Elmer, all of Dike.

The remains were brought to Dike Tuesday and the funeral will be held Saturday afternoon. Rev. B. L. Weaver officiating.

D. M. Tobias Dies At Rochester

About three weeks ago, D. M. Tobias went to Rochester, Minn., to have an operation for hernia. On the 15th he submitted to the operation and went through that all right. He was getting along nicely and was to leave the hospital on last Saturday or Sunday. But Saturday the doctors discovered that he had a slight internal hemorrhage and a blood transfusion was given. Mr. Tobias felt good after this, and about 9 o'clock Saturday night told the nurse that he was all right and that as he felt drowsy he would go to sleep. About a half an hour later when they looked in to see if he needed any attention they found that he had passed quietly away. So peacefully had been his passing that the patient in the adjoining bed didn't know it until they were removing the body.

Sunday morning a belated telegram, sent some time Saturday, arrived here stating that Mr. Tobias was not so well and that some of the family had better come up. Elmer and Mrs. Jeppe Schultz left at once for Rochester, but when they got there they found their father had died the night before, and the circumstances about as stated above.

The body was shipped home arriving here Tuesday noon.

Mr. Tobias was 59 years old. He was one of the early merchants in Dike coming here form Hudson in 1902. After conducting a store here for about seven years, he sold his business to Hans Kelsen and retired from active business life. He was a conscientious level headed business man, and has always been a public spirited man, ever ready to aid in anything for the advancement of the community.

While a quiet and reserved man, he was an affectionate father, and since the death of his wife in 1917, his time has been devoted to his children, four of whom reside at this place.

Funeral services were delayed on account of Mrs. Minnie Schultz coming from Strathmore, Canada, and not arriving here until Friday night. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Weaver of Walker and Rev. Smith, assisted by the Odd Fellows of Hudson and Dike. Burial in Dike cemetery.
