Shirley Lyman Dilly

Shirley Lyman Dilly, 82, died at his home in Aplington, Thursday evening December 21st, 1978. He was born June 10, 1896, in Grundy Center, Iowa, the son of Henry and Luella Cole Dilly. After he graduated from the Grundy Center school, he entered the U.S. Marines and served in WWI.

In Waterloo, Iowa, July 18, 1919, he was married to Minnie Tjaden. They lived in Wellsburg, then moved to Aplington in 1935. Shirley was owner of the Aplington Elevator where he worked for 40 years before retiring in 1970. Besides a veteran of the WWI Marines, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington and a member of the American Legion of Aplington.

He is survived by his wife, Minnie; one grandson, Kevin Dilly studying at the University of Northern in Cedar Falls; two granddaughters, Donna Dilly of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Mrs. Dave (Peggy) Sears of Mankato, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Genevieve Dilly of Hampton; one sister, Cora Smith, of Waterloo, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Donald and Kenneth.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 23rd, at the First Presbyterian Church in Aplington, with burial in the Hampton Cemetery, Hampton. The Schwartz-Engelkes Chapel in Aplington was in charge of the arrangements.
