Robert Grimes, 82
Robert Grimes, 82, of Wellsburg, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center of complications of bone cancer.
Funeral services were Friday, April 14, at 10:30 a.m. at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, rural Wellsburg, with Pastor Jeanne Koughn officiating. Burial was in the Geneseo Cemetery, rural Buckingham. Military graveside rites were conducted by the Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and American Legion Post No. 213, Wellsburg.
Pallbearers were Allan Ibbotson, Don Heikens, Paul Wendt, Pete Wetrich, Larry Nederhoff and Wade Aukes.
Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice in Waterloo.
Robert was born on September 27, 1917, in Shannon City the son of Charles and Bernice (Neideigh) Grimes. He served six years in the United States Navy as a radioman first class during W.W.II.
On June 19, 1947 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Kerr in the Geneseo Methodist Church, rural Buckingham. He retired after 31 years as a depot agent for the Rock Island Railroad. He spent 17 of those years at Montezuma, where his children graduated from high school and he served 10 years as a volunteer for the fire department and five years as a Boy Scout leader.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Bill and Lester.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy of Wellsburg; son, Jim Grimes and wife Marilyn of San Diego, CA; daughter, Mary Kinkade and husband Rex of Des Moines; brother, Charles Grimes of Rancho Cordova, CA; four grandchildren, Lindsay Warden of Des Moines, Michael Grimes of Arcata, CA, Jason Grimes of San Diego, CA and Hillary Miner of West Des Moines; and one great-granddaughter, Brittany Miner of West Des Moines.
The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
