Dora Mae Smith Button was born in Jasonville, Indiana on May 10, 1912, to Mary Margaret Boyer Smith and Amos Smith, the youngest of fourteen children. Her father died when she was eight months old.

Dora lived in Indiana with her mother, brothers and sisters until she was twelve. At that time her sister, Pearl Schwarck, who had married an Iowa farmer, invited her to come to live with them. Dora left her Indiana home, came to Grundy County, attended elementary school at Melrose #5, and graduated in 1930 from Eldora High School.

In 1931, Dora married Glen Button who had been born and raised in Grundy County. Dora and Glen lived in Melrose Township where Glen farmed until his death in 1987. They had three children, Glendon, Gary and Jean.

Dora was an elementary school teacher, first in the rural schools of Grundy County, and later in Wellsburg. Most of her teaching years were spent with first graders. Her studies for teacher's certification stretched over quite a number of years and was done primarily on nights and weekends while she was teaching. Dora's graduation from Drake University in 1964 was an occasion for much celebration.

Dora was artistic, creative, and adventurous. She loved needle work, quilting, all kinds of crafts and most especially, trying something new. This was a delight to her grandchildren, as well as her school children.

As a lifetime member of the Ivester Church of the Brethren, Dora served the church community as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and in numerous other ways.

Several years after Glen's death, Dora moved to a condominium in Conrad. In 1998 she moved to Oakview Nursing Home where she passed away on September 7, 2006.

Dora is survived by her three children and their spouses, Glendon and Wanda Button of Conrad, Gary and Caryl Button of Eldora, Jean and Marvin Heikens of Hubbard; thirteen grandchildren, Cosette Scallon, Timothy Button-Harrison, David Button, Karin Thill, Susanne Button, Mark, Todd, Jon, Lynn and Sara Button, Darold and Dwight Heikens, Dawn Ringena; Twenty-one great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

Services will be held at: 1:30 P.M. Thursday, September 14, 2006, at the Ivester Church of the Brethren north of Conrad. Private family burial services were held on Saturday, September 9, 2006, at the Sheller Cemetery near Wellsburg. Services have been entrusted to our Johnston Funeral Home in Conrad.
