In Memoriam

James Foster, Clerk of the District Court of Grundy County, Iowa, died at Grundy Center, June 27, A.D. 1863.

The deceased was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, September 13th, 1809, where he lived until 1857, when he moved to this County and settled in Beaver Township. Mr. F. has held different offices of trust and has always discharged his duties with credit to himself and honor to his constituents. Dignified and courteous as an officer and unbending in integrity, connected with an upright, moral character, he won the confidence and esteem of all whose acquaintance he made, and deeply impressed them with the rare qualities of his noble, generous heart. With his usual energy and fidelity he continued his work in the office until 4 o'clock p.m. of June 25th, when he was taken with a "chill" and fever which raged with unrelenting fury till the next day, when congestion of the brain and inflammation of bowels and stomach terminated his earthly career. Thus in forty-eight hours from the time he took his bed, passed away from earth to the Spirit land one of the most affable, kind-hearted, noble men that it was ever our privilege to become acquainted with.

He leaves a wife, two sons and two daughters, together with other kindred and a wide circle of acquaintances East and West to mourn his loss. May a kind Providence sustain the widow and fatherless, and may they so imitate the virtues of the deceased and follow the teaching of Divine truth that they may finally meet in that land.

"Where sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and feared no more."

Dated, Grundy, July 11, A.D. 1863.
