Verjean Arends

Verjean Lois Arends, age 73 of Ackley, passed away June 18, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born October 3, 1927 in Eldora, the daughter of Ernest and Lois (Cross) Gunn.

She was a 1945 graduate of Owasa High School, and attended Ellsworth College to study education and play basketball. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and taught in country school at Ellis Township south of Iowa Falls.

On July 25, 1948, she wed Donald G. Arends at the Owasa Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley. Arends was active in 4-H for over 40 years as a member and leader.

Arends is survived by: her husband, son Brian (Diane) Arends of Omaha, Nebraska, daughter Anita (Mark) Adkins of Ames, sister Marilyn (Dale) Petty of Eldora, and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held June 21, 2001 at Faith Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tim Diehl officiating. Burial followed in the East Friesland Cemetery.

The Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley was in charge of the arrangements.
