Donald W. Smit, 62, died Saturday at Washoe Medical Center.

A native of Wellsburg, Iowa, he was born Oct. 31, 1929, and had been a Sparks resident since 1955, coming from Wellsburg, Iowa.

Smit was a Commercial Hardware employee for 16 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry J. and Florence Maas Smit; and brother Alvin.

Surviving are his widow, Betty, and son David, both of Sparks; sons Donald of Carson City, and Damon of Reno; daughter Sally Neitz of Las Vegas; sister Marion Engelkes of Wellsburg, Iowa; and six grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ross, Burke & Knobel Mortuary, Sparks.

A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

A memorial is being established with the Washoe County School District Regional Track Facility, c/o Dudley Cate, Reed High School, 1350 Baring Blvd., Sparks 89431.
