Stuart Slifer Services Held

Stuart Kevin Slifer, 42, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, formerly of Wellsburg died Monday, April 28, at St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe of heart failure.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the Christ Covenant Church in Wellsburg. Pastor Douglas Holmes officiated. Burial was in Hazelgreen Cemetery in rural Ackley.

Pallbearers were Steven Hook, Lindsey Beving, Eldon Nederhoff, Robert Riebkes, Larry Haren and Doug Gronewold. Honorary pallbearers were Shane Slifer, Andrew Slifer, Nicholas Slifer and Elsy Slifer.

A memorial fund has been established.

Stuart was born August 13, 1954, the son of Ivan and Frances Lindaman Slifer at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. He attended and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1972. He was manager of the basketball and football teams and took part in music and plays. He was a member of 4-H and FFA. He attended Hawkeye Tech and earned a degree in animal science and horticulture. He also spent one year at the University of New Mexico in Las Cruces. He spent six months in the Peace Corps in Ecuador. He spent some summers as a sheepherder in Montana and Wyoming. He also worked at Austinville Feeder Pigs, IBS in Eldora and at Greenhouse Nurseries in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He loved the outdoors, animals and landscaping.

He is survived by his parents, Ivan and Frances of Wellsburg, 3 brothers, Steven and wife Betty of Filer, Idaho, Sidney and wife Beth, and Spencer, all of Wellsburg; nephews, Shane and Nicholas and Andrew Slifer; niece, Elsy; a special great-aunt with whom he made his home in New Mexico, Miriam Fricken; and many other relatives and friends.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg was in charge of the arrangements.
