Sioux Falls--Alvin H. Giesking, 78, of 101 S. Western Ave. died Thursday, April 20, 2006 at Sioux Valley Hospital.
Services in Sioux Falls, SD 2:00 PM Sunday, April 23, at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, SD with visitation from 11:00 AM 3:00 PM.
Services in Reinbeck, IA will be 10:30 AM Monday, April 24, 2006 at Union Congregational United Church of Christ, Reinbeck, IA and interment with military honors at the Reinbeck Cemetery.
Alvin Henry Giesking, son of Henry and Hermine (Koch) Giesking, was born April 27, 1927[sic] at Wellsburg, IA. He grew up there graduating from Wellsburg (IA) High School in 1944. He entered the US Navy in 1944 at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He served during WWII as a Navy SEAL and was honorably discharged in 1947. He returned to Iowa where he began farming for a short time.
Alvin was united in marriage with Diane Storjohann on December 29, 1962 at Nashua, IA. In 1963, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he worked selling cars for 25 years, and eventually became the General Manager of the Lincoln-Mercury Dealership. He then started A & D Roofing and Siding Company in which he operated for 15 years. As he approached semi-retirement, he began working as a Security Officer with the Airport for four years, and then with Sioux Merchant Patrol for several years.
Alvin was a member of East Side Lutheran Church, the John M. Bliss VFW Post #628 and the American Legion Post #15. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed going to the casino in Flandreau. Alvin was a master at the "Art of Talking" and he loved to visit with everyone he encountered.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Diane Giesking, Sioux Falls, SD; four children, Eldon Giesking, Morrison, IA, Sandra Cary, Waterloo, IA, Marsha Seymour, Marshalltown, IA and Douglas Giesking, Omaha, NE; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, William Giesking, Grundy Center, IA; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl; a sister, Charlotte Hempen; and a daughter-in-law, Anita Giesking.
