Hilko Siebrands Dies from Cancer

Hilko Siebrands died at his home in Grundy Center last Thursday forenoon from cancer. His health began to fail last summer. He went to the hospital at Iowa City on the 31st of January where he was treated for a month. He had been confined to his bed continually since Easter Sunday. He was 73 years, 7 months and 17 days old at the time of his death.

Hilko Harm Siebrands was born Oct. 16, 1871, at Pogum, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in the land of his birth. In 1893, at 22 years of age, he came to America, locating in Grundy county. For some years he worked out on the farm in the vicinity of Reinbeck.

He was united in marriage May 2, 1898, to Marika Hemkea of Grundy county. The couple established their first home at Reinbeck. Thereafter they moved to Holland where they lived for about 30 years and where the deceased served as a mail messenger. Ten years ago this coming June they established their residence in Grundy Center.

Seven children were born to the Siebrands union, two sons and five daughters. The two sons died in infancy and the surviving daughters are the following: Mrs. Hilka Siefken of Reinbeck; Mrs. Minnie Schafer, Grundy Center; Mrs. Bena Ridder, Allison; Mrs. Carrie Brandt, Shell Rock; Mrs. Gertrude Beitelmann, Parkersburg.

Besides his wife and daughters who mourn his passing, the deceased is survived by 16 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. One of the grandsons, Hilko J. Siefken, is serving in the armed forces with the Navy. In coming to this country, the deceased left behind him also three brothers and two sisters, but from whom no word has been received for a long time.

Funeral services were held from Salem Lutheran church near Fern, where Mr. Siebrands had made his church home, on Monday afternoon, with Pastor Geo. F. Dirks in charge. Interment was made in Salem Lutheran cemetery.
