Roger James Hook, 78, of Grundy Center, passed away on Monday, June 19th at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 23rd from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 24th at 10:30 AM at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. The burial will follow the service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center with a luncheon to follow. Memorials may be directed to the church.

Roger was born May 16, 1939, in Grundy Center, Iowa, the son of Martha Meester and Harm Hook. He was raised in Grundy Center where he received his education, graduating with the class of 1957. On June 16, 1961, Roger was united in marriage to Nancy Tanner in Grundy Center. Roger served in the United States Army/ Army Reserve from 1962 to 1968 when he was honorably discharged. After leaving the service, Roger spent most of his life aside Nancy on their family farm.

Roger had many interests in his life, none more than his love for family and grandchildren. Roger loved the outdoors, agriculture, and his flower garden. Roger was very active in the community and the Bethany Presbyterian church where he served as a deacon. Roger was on the REC board, and the Grundy County school board. Roger had a passion for bowling and participated in league play for 50+ years. Roger excelled in track & field his 4 years in high school at Grundy Center. Upon graduation, he held school records in the shot put, discus, football throw and 4x440 yard relay. He enjoyed travel and speaking German as well.

Roger is survived by his wife Nancy; his children David (Shelly) Hook, Susanne (Mike) Carney; grandchildren Travis Hook, Blake Hook, McKenzie Carney, Sierra Carney, Drake Carney; sister Marcy (Bob) Knaack; A “French son” Jean Claude “Coco” Matha (exchange student 40 years ago who has stayed in close touch along with many visits) and his two daughters Romane and Lauraine. Roger is preceded in death by his parents and sister Phyllis Pies.
